Jewelry shop heist in northern India: thieves flee with USD 48,000 despite owner’s gunfire

In a daring daylight robbery in northern India’s Bihar, thieves managed to escape with jewelry worth USD 48,000 (₹40 lakhs) from PP Jewelers, even after the shop owner shot at them in self-defense. Two of the robbers were injured and arrested by the police, but two others fled the scene with the stolen valuables.

 

The incident took place at PP Jewelers located near Patel Chowk in the Nagar Thana area of Begusarai on October 21.

Visuals showed inside the jewelry shop, customers were browsing items when a group of robbers stormed in, creating panic among everyone. As fear spread, the shop owner fired a warning shot, startling the thieves. Chaos erupted, with customers fleeing and a tense atmosphere prevailing as the robbers hesitated in their attempts to steal.

 

According to the shop owner, Pramod Poddar, his son Rajiv was present when four masked robbers entered the store and began examining various pieces of jewelry on the first floor. Suddenly, the robbers drew pistols and began the robbery. In the ensuing chaos, they assaulted a staff member named Ajay, causing injuries.

 

In response, Poddar fired his weapon, hitting two of the robbers. The injured robbers were later restrained inside the store until the police arrived. The thieves managed to escape with a haul of jewelry worth between ₹35 to ₹40 lakhs, as reported by Poddar.

 

The injured robbers, identified as Samik Kapoor from Samastipur and Chotu Kumar alias Chhote Lal from Begusarai, were taken to the hospital for treatment under police custody. As the crowd gathered, tensions escalated, and attempts were made to assault the captured robbers. However, the police successfully intervened and removed them from the scene.

 

Following the incident, SP Manish and a large police force arrived to investigate the crime. CCTV footage confirmed the presence of four robbers, and one of their motorcycles was found at the scene. Police teams are currently analyzing the footage and other CCTV cameras in the vicinity to trace the robbers’ movements before and after the heist.
