IndiGo flight defies cyclone turbulence in heart-stopping Chennai landing attempt
A dramatic video showing an IndiGo aircraft battling to land amid turbulence caused by a cyclone has quickly garnered widespread attention, drawing focus to the severe weather challenges in the region.
The incident took place in Chennai City of Tamil Nadu, southern India on November 30.
Visuals show the plane attempting to land amidst intense turbulence, only to abort the attempt at the last moment and ascend again. During this operation, it tilted precariously to the left, just few feet above the runway.
According to reports, IndiGo confirmed the incident, stating that the Mumbai-Chennai flight faced adverse weather, including rain and strong winds, prompting the decision to perform a go-around—a standard procedure when a safe landing is not possible.
“Due to adverse weather conditions, including rain and strong, gusty winds (which later led to the closure of Chennai airport), the cockpit crew of flight 6E 683, operating between Mumbai and Chennai, in accordance with established safety protocols,” said IndiGo.
The airline stressed that such actions are standard and pilots are extensively trained to handle these scenarios. “This is a standard and safe maneuver, and our pilots are extensively trained to handle such situations with the utmost professionalism. A go-around is performed when a safe landing cannot be achieved, as was the case with this flight,” the statement added.
The aircraft successfully landed in Chennai at approximately 12:40 pm, shortly before the airport suspended operations for the rest of the day due to the cyclone.
