Indian coast guard rescues stranded fishing boat and 11 crew members off coast in southern India

The Indian Coast Guard successfully coordinated a daring search and rescue operation for the distressed fishing boat Aashni (IND-TN-12-MM-6623) and its 11 crew members off the coast of southern India’s Kerala.

The incident took place in Ponnani, Malappuram district on July 17.
Visuals showed despite challenging weather conditions, the crew of ICGS Saksham reached the distressed boat and embarked a technical team, which carried out de-flooding operations and provided essential technical assistance, fresh water, and rations to the stranded crew.

Braving heavy rains and challenging weather conditions, the Coast Guard’s swift action ensured the safety of the stranded crew.

Speaking to Newslions Media, Suresh P K of Indian Coast Guard, Kochi, Kerala mentioned how the distress signal was first picked up by an Indian Coast Guard Dornier aircraft on a routine maritime surveillance mission on the night of July 16. The aircraft spotted the fishing boat, which was 50 nautical miles off Ponani and 80 nautical miles from Kochi, suffering from uncontrolled flooding due to a hull rupture and a loss of propulsion.

Recognizing the severity of the situation, the Indian Coast Guard District Headquarters No. 4 (Kerala & Mahe) quickly diverted the patrol vessel ICGS Saksham to the location. Additionally, an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) was launched from Kochi at 2:05 AM on July 17, followed by the deployment of ICGS Abhinav at 2:45 AM to support the search and rescue efforts.

The coordinated sea-air operation ensured timely aid and the safety of all 11 crew members aboard the fishing boat Aashni, which is now being towed to Kochi.

This successful rescue operation highlights the Indian Coast Guard’s unwavering commitment and capability to safeguard lives within India’s maritime zones.
