Indian Coast Guard intercepts staggering 5,500 kg methamphetamine haul near Andaman Islands
In a groundbreaking drug seizure near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Indian Coast Guard confiscated 5,500 kilograms of methamphetamine from a suspicious fishing trawler.
The incident took place approximately 150 km from Port Blair on November 24, when a Coast Guard plane spotted the vessel, identified as Soe Wai Yan Htoo.
Visuals showed the patrol boat approaching the trawler in broad daylight amidst the vast ocean. Following the seizure, officials stood with the confiscated drugs, highlighting the significant haul.
According to reports, the plane’s pilot immediately alerted officials, prompting fast patrol boats to intercept the vessel. Upon searching, more than 3,000 packets of methamphetamine, each weighing 2 kg, were discovered. Six Myanmar nationals aboard the trawler were apprehended.
Defense officials revealed that the drugs were likely intended for distribution within India and neighboring nations. India continues its rigorous efforts to combat drug trafficking, particularly along routes from countries like Pakistan and Iran.
