High tide fury observed as Cyclone Dana looms over eastern India
In a weather event in eastern India’s West Bengal, torrential rainfall accompanied by high tides was observed as a cyclone approaches landfall.
The incident took place in the Digha area of East Medinipur district on October 23.
Visuals showed the powerful waves rising in the darkness, as furious tides created strong currents in the sea.
According to reports, the high tide was a result of the approaching Cyclone Dana, which formed over the Bay of Bengal and has been gradually moving towards the Odisha and West Bengal coasts. Reports indicate that low-lying areas in the Kendrapara, Bhadrak, and Balasore districts of Odisha, as well as East Medinipur district in West Bengal, are likely to experience storm surges and flooding.
Experts predict that the cyclone will make landfall near Dhamara port and Bhitarkanika sanctuary in Odisha and Sagar Islands in West Bengal early Friday morning. The extended landfall process is due to its impact on islands and rivers in the region. The post-monsoon season typically sees the formation of 2-3 cyclones or depressions in the Bay of Bengal, and this system is expected to intensify due to warm ocean temperatures.
