Heavy rains swell Alaknanda river, trigger flood alerts in northern India

In the northern India’s Uttarakhand, continuous heavy rainfall has caused the Alaknanda River to rise to alarming levels.

The incident took place in Rudraprayag district and the video went viral on July 6.

Visuals showed abnormal and scary sight of the river overflowing drowning almost the entire area.

According to reports, the river, a major tributary of the Ganges, has submerged several riverbank areas, including popular ghats. Notably, the waters have almost reached the neck of a 10-foot statue of Lord Shiva situated on the riverbank.

Authorities have issued warnings and advised local residents to remain cautious as the water levels continue to climb, with the risk of flooding increasing. Emergency measures are being considered to manage the potential crisis, and locals are urged to stay updated on weather forecasts and heed safety advisories.

This situation highlights the ongoing challenges of monsoon season in the region, which often leads to significant water level rises in major rivers.
