Heavy rains lash southern India: floodwaters sweep away motorcyclist, city roads submerged
Southern India’s Telangana has been inundated by continuous heavy rains, leading to severe flooding in multiple areas. Floodwaters swept away a motorcyclist, and residents are advised to stay indoors as more rain is expected.
The incident took place in the Ramnagar area of Hyderabad on August 19.
Visuals showed a man riding his scooter at night when he tried to cross a flooded area. As he did, he lost control and fell off his scooter, both he and the scooter were swept away by the strong current. Another man passing by saw what was happening and rushed to help. He managed to grab the scooter and the man, trying to prevent them from being carried away. Despite his efforts, both the scooter and the rider continued to be swept away by the floodwaters, with the rescuer running after them, desperately trying to keep up.
Hyderabad has been experiencing relentless rainfall since late last night, causing widespread flooding across the city. Many areas are severely affected, including Abids, Nampally, Nagole, Amberpet, Abdullahpur, Jeedimetla, Suraram, Suchitra, Basheer Bagh, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, and others. Roads in these areas are completely submerged, with floodwaters resembling rivers flowing through the streets.
As a result of the ongoing heavy rains, schools in the city have been closed, and the authorities have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Hyderabad, warning of continued heavy rain in areas such as BN Reddy Nagar, Hayat Nagar, Jagadgiri Gutta, Bahadurpally, Gundlapochampally, and Pate Basheerabad.
With more rain forecasted, the situation remains critical, and residents are advised to stay cautious. The city’s infrastructure is struggling to cope with the deluge, and the floodwaters are expected to persist for some time.
