Heavy rains cause waterlogging and chaos in northern India
by Bhagyashree BarmanA brief but intense rainstorm brought much-needed relief from the sweltering heat in northern India’s Uttar Pradesh, however, it also caused severe waterlogging, leading to significant problems for residents.
The incident took place in the Loni area of Ghaziabad district on July 13.
Visuals showed how the whole area got submerged and made the site look like a drainage canal.
According to reports, the Loni area, particularly the Delhi-Saharanpur Old Highway, was heavily affected. The road from Shiv Vihar Metro Station to a two-kilometre stretch was completely submerged, with water levels reaching up to two feet. Overflowing drains spilt black water onto the roads, making potholes invisible and causing an e-rickshaw loaded with fruits to overturn, resulting in the loss of many fruits.
Many residential societies in the Loni area also experienced flooding. Recently, Nandkishore Gurjar, a local BJP MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly), had written to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari about the incomplete construction of this highway. Gurjar claimed that the contractor had abandoned the project, leaving drains unbuilt and the road deteriorating prematurely. Despite these allegations, no action has been taken against the contractor.
