Heavy rainfall in western India causes road to split into two
Torrential rains in western India’s Gujarat, led to a sudden deluge that washed away portions of a ₹2 crore ( $267,000 USD) road constructed just two years ago.
The incident took place in Nandrang Taluka of Bharuch district and the video went viral on July 16.
Visuals showed after continuous rainfall, a road had split into two halves, attracting onlookers from the nearby area. People stood around, observing the aftermath of the road’s fracture, wondering what would happen next. The scene was marked by muddy water pooling around the fractured sections, with remnants of asphalt and gravel strewn across the area. Local authorities and workers could be seen assessing the damage, while residents gathered in groups, discussing the unexpected turn of events and the potential repercussions for their daily lives.
The unexpected downpour, which lasted four hours, resulted in approximately 7 inches of rainfall, causing flooding in low-lying areas. Among the worst affected was Yal village, where water from the heavy rainfall overflowed, leading to the collapse of a road constructed at considerable expense two years ago. The road, aimed at improving local connectivity, now lies divided into two sections due to the force of the floodwaters. Local authorities have begun assessing the damage and are planning immediate repairs to restore connectivity to the affected areas.
This incident underscores the vulnerability of infrastructure in the face of severe weather conditions, prompting calls for robust measures to safeguard against such natural calamities in the future.
