Heavy rainfall causes severe waterlogging in northern India, IMD issues orange alert

The incident took place near barahpula flyover at Safdarjung opposite road in Delhi and the video went viral on September 13.
Visuals showed after continuous rain, a large amount of water had accumulated on the roads, with the water level rising significantly. The flow of the water was also quite strong, making it difficult for vehicles and pedestrians to move through. The roads appeared submerged, with rippling waves forming as cars attempted to drive through the flooded streets.
Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) are grappling with heavy rainfall after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an ‘Orange’ alert for Friday, September 13, 2024. The downpour, which started in the morning, caused waterlogging in several low-lying areas, disrupting daily life and leading to traffic congestion. Commuters faced long delays, particularly in regions prone to flooding.
The IMD reported that the depression over Southwest Uttar Pradesh has weakened into a well-marked low-pressure system, which is expected to persist and gradually lose strength over the next 12 hours. Despite this, more rainfall accompanied by gusty winds reaching up to 30 kmph is forecast for Delhi throughout the day. The weather agency has warned of further disruptions, especially in vulnerable areas.
The maximum temperature in the city is expected to stay around 28°C, which is six degrees lower than usual for this time of year. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, avoid waterlogged zones, and take necessary precautions.
