Heavy rain causes severe waterlogging in southern India, disrupts traffic

After continuous heavy rainfall, roads became severely waterlogged in southern India’s Karnataka, with water reaching significant heights.

The incident took place at Virajpet in Kodagu District on July 18.

Visuals showed the heavy rainfall led to significant water accumulation on a road, creating a flood-like scene. Vehicles attempting to pass through faced great difficulty, struggling to navigate the deep water. Drivers had to maneuver carefully, finding it challenging to get their vehicles through the submerged roadway.

Due to relentless heavy rains, Deputy Commissioner Venkat Raja declared a holiday for all schools and PU colleges in Kodagu on Thursday, 18 July. This precautionary measure aimed to ensure the safety of students as the region is facing continuous downpours.

For several days, the heavy rainfall has caused significant waterlogging and flooding in various areas of Kodagu. The adverse weather conditions have made roads hazardous and severely disrupted transportation, leading the district administration to take immediate action to protect school-going children.

The ongoing downpours have resulted in a red alert being issued for the district, highlighting the severity of the situation. The heavy rains have not only affected daily life but also posed considerable safety risks, making the closure of educational institutions a necessary step.
