A massive landslide in northern India’s Uttarakhand has led to the road’s closure, stranding numerous travelers.

The incident took place near the Patalganga Langsi Tunnel on the Badrinath Highway in Chamoli District on July 10.

Visuals showed during the landslide, a section of the mountain crumbled and plummeted down, bringing with it debris and rocks that scattered across the road. The highway became completely blocked as a result. For several hours, the debris hung suspended in the air like a cloud, slowly dispersing with the wind.

A major landslide occurred near the Patalganga Langsi Tunnel on Badrinath Highway at around 12:15 PM, causing a complete roadblock. Fortunately, no vehicles were passing through the tunnel at the time, preventing a potentially disastrous incident. The highway at Joshimath has been closed since 7 AM on Tuesday due to a large rockfall, and efforts to clear the highway are currently ongoing. The road closure has halted all vehicular movement in the area.

Despite the absence of rain for the past three days, the mountains continue to crumble, with the landslide occurring at an old landslide zone near Pagal Nala. The debris has not yet been cleared, leaving many travelers stranded in Joshimath. The closure of hotels and shops due to today’s voting has further compounded the difficulties for stranded travelers.

The Meteorological Center has issued a yellow alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Champawat and Nainital districts in the Kumaon division. Additionally, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts are also expected to experience several rounds of heavy rainfall. Over the next three days, multiple rounds of heavy rainfall are anticipated across the state.
