Girl rescued after falling into water-filled pit in northern India

A serious lapse by the Rampur Maniharan Nagar Panchayat administration in northern India’s Uttar Pradesh led to a schoolgirl falling into a water-filled pit. She was rescued by bystanders after nearly drowning in the hole, which was dug for electric pole installation.

The incident took place at Rampur Maniharan, a town under Nagar Panchayat administration, in Saharanpur district on September 10.

Visuals showed a girl walking along the road accidentally fell into a pit that was completely filled with water. She hadn’t noticed the pit as it blended with the surrounding waterlogged area. As she fell, panic set in, but fortunately, a man nearby noticed and quickly rushed to her aid. With a sense of urgency, he pulled her back up in time, saving her life. The scene is tense, with water splashing and the pit barely visible under the murky water, while the girl, shocked and drenched, is being safely pulled out.

A major administrative oversight came to light in Rampur Maniharan on Tuesday when a young girl returning from school fell into a water-filled pit. The incident, captured on nearby CCTV, showed local residents rushing to save the girl after witnessing her struggle in the water. Thankfully, she was safely pulled out.

The pit, approximately five feet deep, had been dug on Monday by the Nagar Panchayat for the installation of an electric pole in the town’s main market. However, during the excavation, a waterline was damaged, leading to water flooding the road and filling the pit.

The rupture in the waterline caused disruption to the drinking water supply in several neighborhoods, leaving many households without water. Additionally, the market area was flooded. Residents expressed their frustration with the electricity department and the Nagar Panchayat for the negligence. Local representative Kuldeep Balyan assured that efforts to repair the pipeline were underway.
