Furious mob in Bangladesh vandalizes Hindu businesses, sparking terror within community
The Hindu community was once again targeted and terrorised by extremists, as they destroyed businesses and homes, leaving behind a scene of devastation.
The incident took place in Sunamganj’s Dowarabazar upazila in Bangladesh on December 3.
Visuals show the aftermath of the vandalism, with shops and infrastructure utterly devastated. Items inside the properties were scattered, broken, and destroyed, while shattered glass and wrecked structures highlighted the terror of the intense attack and looting.
According to reports, the violence erupted after a Hindu man allegedly posted a derogatory image on Facebook, angering the Muslim community. Zahidul Haque, officer-in-charge of Dowarabazar Police Station, stated that the unrest began around 7:40pm when a local man shared the post, claiming Akash had uploaded a “religiously offensive” photo. “The post sparked outrage, leading to protests,” Haque said.
“We took Akash into custody for his safety, but the mob attacked our team in an attempt to snatch him. They later vandalised several houses, including Akash’s, in Manglargaon village, and targeted Hindu-owned shops in the town,” he added. The situation was eventually brought under control after the army intervened, while local, political, and Islamist leaders worked to calm the mob.
