There was also a great amount of smoke which rose from these firecrackers going off and it could be seen from a long distance. The origin of the Thrissur Pooram dates way back to the year 1796 when it was started by Shakthan Thampuran, who ruled Cochin from 1790 to 1805. It is a seven-dat festival which is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Medam when the moon rises with the Pooram star. This popular temple festival gives a glimpse of the rich culture that Kerala houses with decorated elephants marching, having colourful umbrellas on top. People celebrating this festival light up fireworks to commemorate the joyous occasion.
