Family defies raging stream carrying dead body for last rites in southern India
In a harrowing incident in southern India’s Andhra Pradesh, a family was forced to cross an overflowing stream to perform the last rites of a family member.
The incident took place at a stream near Pinakota Pedakota panchayat in Alluri district on September 13.
Visuals showed the stream overflowing with floodwaters moving at high speed. Several family members were seen carrying the body on their shoulders, balancing precariously as they crossed the water with the help of a rope. The family moved carefully, struggling against the force of the gushing water to complete the final rituals.
According to reports, the stream has been in spate for days due to continuous rain, causing severe hardships for the residents of nearby villages. This stream serves as the main road for farmers to reach their fields and graze cattle, but the lack of a bridge has made life difficult. Villagers, including the local Sarpanch, have demanded immediate action to construct a bridge to alleviate their suffering.
