Explosion rocks residential area in northern India, grenade attack suspected

In a concerning incident in northern India’s Punjab, an explosion occurred in a posh residential area, suspected to be a grenade attack.

The incident took place in Sector 10 of Chandigarh city on September 11.

Visuals showed suspects arriving in an autorickshaw. A man wearing a white t-shirt is seen running moments before the explosion in the upscale neighborhood. The auto, seen speeding away after the blast, narrowly missed a collision with a car while making a sharp turn.

According to reports, a forensic team from the Chandigarh Police has been dispatched to the location. The suspects are believed to have targeted the resident of the house, a retired Punjab Police officer. A team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has also reached the scene to assist with the investigation. Prior reports suggest one suspect had previously conducted a recce outside the house.

“There was a loud sound. Some pressure-type low-intensity blast occurred, damaging windows and pots,” said Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kanwardeep Kaur.

The complainants, who were sitting on their verandah, reportedly saw the suspects. Efforts are underway to track down the vehicle. The bomb detection squad and Central Forensic Science Laboratory have also arrived to collect evidence.
