Elephant fatally attacks mahout, chaos erupts among bystanders

In a tragic incident, an elephant fatally attacked its mahout on a road during a festival, causing chaos among the locals.

The incident occurred during Koottanad festival, Palakkad district, in southern India’s Kerala on the night of February 6.

Visuals show the elephant aggressively attacking the mahout while three men sit atop the animal. It steps on him multiple times until he seems lying on the floor motionless. Bystanders are screaming, with some rushing attacking it with a stick and stones in an attempt to save the man. The victim remains motionless.

 

The men on the elephant try to control it, but the enraged tusker throws them off, forcing them to flee for their lives. The elephant then starts to attack nearby vehicles, damaging almost ten vehicles. Later, people are seen using a rope to restrain the animal.

Speaking to Newslions, Krishna Das, a Civil Police Officer at Chalissery police station in Palakkad, stated that the elephant, named Vallamkulam Narayanankutty, belongs to a Mahadev temple. The tusker fatally attacked its mahout 42-year-old Kunjumon Ibrahim, when he returned from a prayer and injured three others.
