This incident happened in Erode district of the state and its video went viral April 8.
Visuals showed the heartbreaking scene of the elephant lying in the pit. It needed water and didn’t have any energy left even to move. The pachyderm, a female, could only lay and move about its trunk in a desperate bid to find some water so that it could revitalize itself. The elephant also looked as if it had starved for a while with it not being in the best physical condition.
It was learnt that the wild animal had come out to look for water near the Palanichami temple due to severe drought in the forest area of Kadambur hills next to Sathyamangalam town and fell into the pit subsequently. Sadhasivam, a forest department veterinarian rushed to the spot with a medical team to treat the elephant.
