Elderly plantation worker rescued after getting stuck on areca nut tree

An elderly man became trapped upside down while harvesting an areca nut tree on his plantation using a machine, sparking a dramatic rescue effort.

The incident occurred in Puravoor, near Kadavin, in the southern part of Changaroth village council, Kozhikode district, Kerala, on February 02.

Visuals show the man stuck at the top of the tree while rescue officials attempt to place him in a netted basket and slowly lower him to the ground. Meanwhile, residents assist by placing the man onto a stretcher.

Speaking to Newslions, Rafeek Kavil, Senior Fire and Rescue Officer, said that while harvesting areca nuts using a machine, the man’s leg got caught, causing his head to hang down and leading him to lose consciousness. The man, identified as 60-year-old Ahmed Haji from Muthuvannach, was rescued after a one-hour operation by the fire and rescue team from Perambra.

Due to the difficulty of accessing the areca nut tree, the team used a nearby tree to set up a ladder and secured ropes to other trees, such as teak and mango trees, for additional support. They successfully brought Haji down safely. He was then transported to a hospital by ambulance.

Before the fire and rescue team arrived, local volunteers who had received training from the fire department, including KD Rajesh from Kadiyangad Nagath and residents Munir Malail and Riyaz Nagath, helped by securing Haji to the tree, greatly assisting the rescue effort.

The rescue operation, led by Assistant Station Officers M. Pradeepan and P.C. Premin, and Fire & Rescue Officers K. Sreekanth, G.B. Sanalraj, V. Vineeth, and P.P. Rajesh, involved climbing various trees. Fire & Rescue Officers R. Jinesh, S.S. Hrithin, and Home Guards V.K. Babu, P. Muraleedharan, and V.N. Vijayesh, along with residents, actively participated in the operation.
