Drunk elephant goes on rampage, attacks excavator and watch tower after provocation

A wild tusker rampaged through a village after drinking hooch, causing panic among the locals.

The incident occurred in Dam Dim village, in Jalpaiguri district, in northern India’s West Bengal on February 1.

Visuals show an excavator trying to drive the intoxicated elephant away. This triggers the animal and makes it attack the vehicle. The bystanders record videos and chase the tusker as it walks away.

Later, the elephant charges toward a watchtower, causing villagers to flee in fear. It knocks down the structure, sending chunks of concrete crashing to the ground. A man is seen jumping off the tower in terror. As the tusker walks away, locals attack it. Some tug at its tail, while others beat it with sticks or throw bricks at it.

Shortly after, the police are seen confiscating the excavation vehicle for illegally provoking the elephant.

Speaking to Newslions, Sub Inspector Tenzing Bhutia said that the drunk elephant had been provoked constantly by the local villagers. The tusker then became angry and started running everywhere. The locals brought an excavator to shoo away the elephant, but instead, they continued to provoke the large mammal even more. After a long struggle, the police, along with the forest department reached the location, safely escorted the elephant back into the forest and arrested the excavator driver, seizing the vehicle.
