May 1, 2024
Officials of the Defense Research Development Organisation (DRDO) carried out the successful testing of a missile-assisted torpedo system off the coast of eastern India’s Odisha.
This happened on May 1.
Visuals showed the missile being launched into the air by a launcher and it shot high up, leaving behind a trail of smoke before disappearing. A press-release by the DRDO states that this is known as the Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) system and this would massively enhance the Indian Navy’s capability of anti-submarine warfare.
This missile system, which is canister-based, has several advanced sub-systems, the likes of which include solid propulsion system, electromechanical actuator system, precision inertial navigation system etc. The test was deemed successful after several parameters like symmetric separation, ejection and velocity control were validated. “The development of the system will further enhance the strength of our Navy,” India’s defence minister Rajnath Singh stated while lauding the DRDO.
