DRDO and Indian Army successfully test new man-portable anti-tank guided missile system in northern India

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully test-fired the indigenously developed Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM) in northern India’s Rajasthan. This achievement marks a significant step towards enhancing India’s self-reliance in advanced defense technologies.

 

The incident took place at Pokhran Field Firing Range in Jaisalmer and the video went viral on August 13.

Visuals showed in the vast, barren expanse of the Pokhran Field Firing Range, a lone figure stood at a safe distance, operating the remote control to launch the missile. As the command was given, the missile shot forth from its launcher, cutting through the air with precision. Moments later, it arced gracefully before hitting its target, resulting in a dramatic explosion that illuminated the field. The explosion’s impact sent a plume of smoke and debris into the sky, creating a powerful visual display. Throughout the test, the scene was meticulously controlled to ensure safety, with the empty field providing a clear and secure environment for the test.

 

The DRDO has announced a major milestone with the successful test of the Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM) system. Conducted recently at the Pokhran Field Firing Range in Rajasthan, the tests demonstrated exceptional missile and warhead performance. The MPATGM system, consisting of a missile launcher, a Target Acquisition System, and a fire control unit, is designed for both day and night operations with top attack capability.

 

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the DRDO and the Indian Army for their accomplishments, highlighting the system’s role in achieving self-reliance in advanced defense technology. The MPATGM features dual-mode seeker functionality, enhancing its effectiveness in tank warfare.

 

In addition to the MPATGM test, the DRDO showcased various made-in-India weapon systems at the Tarang Shakti exercise in Tamil Nadu. DRDO Chairperson Samir V Kamat emphasized the significance of the ongoing Tarang Shakti exercise for demonstrating domestic weaponry and provided an update on the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). He revealed that the AMCA, a 5.5-generation stealth fighter jet, is in the design phase with development trials expected to conclude by 2034 and induction by 2035. Kamat expressed confidence that the successful development of the AMCA would solidify India’s position as a leader in stealth technology.

 

The exercise also features participation from Indian Air Force aircraft including the LCA Tejas, Mirage 2000, and Rafale, underscoring the nation’s commitment to strengthening strategic partnerships and showcasing its advanced defense capabilities.
