Dramatic hour-long rescue frees 94-year-old woman stranded in well
A 94-year-old woman was quickly rescued by fire department personnel after slipping and falling into a well, avoiding serious injuries.
The incident took place in Marakatte village in Koppa taluk of Chikmagalur district of Karnataka in southern India on December 3.
Visuals show the woman being brought up by the fire personnel, who had entered the well themselves and tied her with ropes to lift her out, holding her tightly. Meanwhile, other rescuers stood by and pulled the rope to bring her to safety. The woman was safely pulled out and quickly made to lie on the ground, with the rescuers emerging from the well unharmed. Other team members then rubbed and cleaned her arms and feet.
Speaking to Newslions, Jose MO, Fire Station Officer in Koppa, Chikmagalur, said the old woman, Kamala, slipped and fell into a well near her home in Marakatte village, Koppa taluk. Upon falling, she managed to grab the pipe of the pump used to lift water from the well and stood on the side, struggling to keep herself above the water. The rescue team arrived at 7:30 and completed the operation by 8:42. Kamala stood on a narrow, circular ledge around the well for an hour, desperately trying to save her life.
Once the family was informed of her fall, they immediately contacted the fire brigade. She was later admitted to hospital and is now in better condition.
