Deadly explosion in southern India: ‘Onion Bomb’ blast leaves six injured in Diwali mishap
A tragic accident in southern India’s Andhra Pradesh has left one dead and six others injured after a makeshift “onion bomb” exploded on a crowded street. The incident occurred as two men transported a bag of Diwali fireworks on their scooter, which detonated upon impact with a pothole.
The incident took place in Eluru District on October 31.
Visuals showed a white scooter speeding through a narrow alley, carrying two individuals. As it approaches a wider intersection, a sudden explosion erupts, engulfing the area in thick smoke. Shards of paper and debris scatter into the air, creating chaos. The scene is filled with panic as a group of 5-6 people nearby are caught in the blast. Once the smoke clears, two figures can be seen fleeing the explosion, clutching their ears in pain, possibly injured. The aftermath reveals scattered scooter parts and body fragments, highlighting the devastating impact of the explosion in the once-quiet alley.
According to reports, hearing a loud blast and seeing smoke rapidly fill the area. Several bystanders, including children and elderly residents, sustained injuries from the impact. Local residents rushed to assist the victims, many of whom had superficial burns and ear injuries from the loud noise.
The primary victim, identified as Sudhakar, was driving the scooter. Emergency responders took all six injured individuals to the local district hospital, where two are in critical condition. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause and nature of the fireworks to determine if the accident involved illegally obtained or unstable materials.
