Dazzling display! Southern Indian traders decorate Lord Ganesha’s idol with UDS 260,000 notes
In an eye-catching display of devotion in southern India’s Andhra Pradesh, traders have adorned a massive Ganesha idol with currency notes totaling USD 262,300.
The incident took place in Mangalagiri town of Guntur District on September 14.
Visuals showed the enormous idol, lavishly decorated not only with traditional ornaments but also with currency notes in various denominations. Traders were seen sharing their statements of gratitude and commitment, while other Hindu deities were also dressed in currency notes and decorations. Worshippers marveled at the unique and vibrant presentation, fully immersed in their spiritual celebration.
According to reports, this extraordinary initiative was spearheaded by Sankar Balaji Gupta, a businessman with a broad range of interests including retail cloth trade, under the guidance of the Mangalagiri Arya Vysya Sangham. The tradition began 18 years ago when local traders first decorated the idol with Rs 5 lakh. Since then, the amount has increased annually as more traders contribute, driven by the belief that such offerings bring prosperity to their businesses.
Balaji stated, “Our pandal has gained fame for its distinctive decoration during Ganesh Puja festivities each year. Traders from all over town follow this tradition. We keep a detailed record of all contributors and return their contributions after the pandal is dismantled.”
