November 9, 2024
In a devastating explosion at a railway station in Pakistan, multiple lives were lost, and several others suffered critical injuries in broad daylight.
The incident took place at the Quetta Railway Station in Balochistan province on November 9.
Visuals showed the scene where passengers, along with their families, waited on the platform for their train when, in an instant, a powerful blast erupted, shattering the railway platform. Further footage showed the station in disarray, with visibly distressed, shocked, and confused people amidst the debris. Some were seen carrying injured passengers on stretchers as the station descended into utter chaos.
According to reports, at least 21 people were killed, and 46 others were injured. Authorities believe a potential suicide bombing caused the explosion as passengers gathered before the departure of the Jaffar Express to Peshawar. Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Operations Muhammad Baloch stated that an emergency was declared at Civil Hospital Quetta, where additional medical personnel were called to handle the influx of casualties. The blast was so intense that it damaged the platform’s roof and echoed across the city.
Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti condemned the attack, labeling it a “horrific act targeting innocent civilians” and ordered an immediate investigation. The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) has claimed responsibility for the explosion, with preliminary reports indicating it occurred near the station’s booking office.
Rescue and law enforcement teams responded promptly, securing the area and transporting the injured and deceased to Civil Hospital Quetta, where officials reported the injured continue to arrive.
