Cylinder explosion sparks massive fire in 22-story Mumbai building

After a cooking gas cylinder explosion in a flat, a massive fire broke out in a 22-story building in northern India’s Maharastra.

The incident took place on the 14th floor of Ansari Heights located on Nishan Pada Road in the Dongri area in south Mumbai on November 27.

Visuals showed the aftermath of a massive explosion, showing an intense fire blazing uncontrollably, spreading rapidly, and creating a chaotic and fearful atmosphere. Thick clouds of smoke filled the air as residents prayed and panicked in the face of the disaster.

According to reports, the fire broke out at around 1 p.m. Samin Nasir Ansari, 44, suffered burns on 22% of his body, while Nasir Ansari, 47, sustained burns on 15% of his body. Sana Ansari, another family member, escaped with minor injuries. Additionally, Anjali Jamdade, a female firefighter, was injured when a windowpane fell on her. All three victims were from the same family. The fire, categorized as a Level III incident, along with subsequent explosions, caused widespread panic in the densely populated neighborhood.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Santosh Sawant stated that construction work was underway on the 15th floor when an LPG cylinder exploded, igniting the fire. The flames quickly spread to the 16th floor through an open window and later reached the 10th and 19th floors due to another cylinder explosion and an AC compressor explosion, respectively.

Local residents stated that the explosions were so loud they initially believed a series of bombs had detonated. As the fire escalated, some residents managed to evacuate the building, while approximately 50 others sought refuge on the terrace. They remained there for nearly four hours until it was safe to descend.

The firefighting operation was extensive, involving 12 water tankers, 10 fire engines, a 90-meter hydraulic ladder, and 20 breathing apparatus sets. However, the brigade faced significant challenges due to the narrow lanes and densely packed buildings in the area. The Mumbai Fire Brigade has announced plans to conduct a safety audit of the building today.
