In a catastrophic turn of events, Cyclone Remal has triggered severe landslides, causing a critical section of National Highway to collapse in northeastern India’s Meghalaya.

The incident took place at National Highway 6 near Lumshnong on May 30.

Visuals showed torrents of water cascading down the hills, surging through the fractured highway, and sweeping downstream. The powerful flow of water has exposed massive rocks and debris, with the landslides eroding significant portions of soil from the surrounding hills.

According to reports portion of National Highway 6, the lifeline connecting Assam, Meghalaya, and Mizoram, has collapsed near Lumshnong in Meghalaya. The collapse was caused by heavy storms and relentless rains induced by Cyclone Remal, leading to devastating landslides.

Authorities have halted traffic on both sides of the highway, urging the public to avoid unnecessary travel until further notice.

The destruction left in the wake of the collapse has severely disrupted transportation in the region, stranding numerous cars and trucks.

Local authorities are advising residents to exercise extreme caution, particularly in areas prone to further landslides and flooding. The cyclone’s impact has been particularly devastating in Mizoram, where at least 29 people have lost their lives and seven remain missing following multiple landslides in Aizawl. The relentless rains continue to pose significant challenges, hampering rescue and recovery efforts.

As the region grapples with the aftermath of Cyclone Remal, the immediate focus remains on ensuring the safety of residents and restoring connectivity along the critical National Highway 6.
