Customs officials recover gold in wire concealed inside trolley bag  in southern India
Officials of the Customs department recovered gold which was hidden in the form of wire in the inner frame of the trolley bags in northern India’s Delhi.
This incident happened at the Tiruchirappalli International Airport on June 6.
Visuals showed one of the officials breaking open the handle of a trolley bag to take out the gold. He repeatedly struck the trolley handle with a pair of pliers and saw a wire concealed inside. He then went on to remove a wire and found that is was gold inside the wire. It was learnt that gold worth Rs 43,16,000 (USD 51,717.72) and weighed 1.323 lbs. The passenger was arrested under the Customs Act of 1962 and an investigation is underway into this matter.
International flights are being operated from Dubai and Sri Lanka to Tiruchirappalli International Airport. The customs authorities are constantly monitoring and confiscating the smuggling of prohibited drugs including gold and narcotics in these flights.
The customs officials got a secret information yesterday that gold was being smuggled through the Trichy airport. Subsequently, the officials who were actively searching the belongings of the passengers, checked the suspicious passengers. In that way, airport customs officers checked the passengers traveling on UL 131 flight which came from Dubai via Colombo to Trichy yesterday.
The passenger has been arrested and further investigation is underway.
