Update: Corruption crackdown: Police recover 30 million in cash, gold, silver from ex-constable’s home

In a significant crackdown on alleged corruption, Lokayukta police seized Rs 2.85 crore (USD334533.94) in cash, 40 kilograms of silver, gold worth Rs 50 lakh (USD58695.44), and other valuables from the residence of a former ex-con stable’s house.

The incident took place in Bhopal City, Madhya Pradesh on December 21.

Visuals show silver bars stored in plastic bags as officers weigh each bar and meticulously record the weights. Meanwhile, cash counting is ongoing, and gold is packed in a separate bag.

According to reports, the total value of the recovered assets, including silver, gold, cash, and real estate-related documents, exceeds Rs 3 crore. The documents are currently under examination to determine the full extent of the former officer’s holdings.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the wealth amassed by the accused far exceeds his known sources of income. “The investigation is ongoing, and we may uncover additional assets as the case progresses,” a senior Lokayukta official stated.

The accused, Saurabh Sharma, a former constable at the Regional Transport Office (RTO), and his associate Chetan Gaur, are believed to have been involved in laundering illicit earnings through the real estate sector.

Earlier, income tax officials recovered 52 kg of gold worth over ₹40.47 crore (USD 4.76 million) and ₹10 crore (USD 1.18 million) in cash from an abandoned car in Bhopal on Thursday night. Notably, the vehicle, from which the gold and cash were seized, is registered with Chetan Gaur’s name, who is a close associate of Sharma. Officials have also raided 51 premises linked to Trishul Construction, Quality Group, and Ishan Group in Bhopal and Indore.

Reportedly, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Priyanka Shukla from Bhopal Zone-1 reportedly stated, “On Thursday night, we were alerted about an abandoned car near Mendori-Kushalpur road within the jurisdiction of Ratibad police station. Upon investigation, we discovered approximately seven or eight bags inside the vehicle. It was suspected that, due to recent raids by the Income Tax and other departments, someone had left their property there.” She further mentioned that the police informed the Income Tax department, which responded by breaking the vehicle’s glass and retrieving the bags.

Upon inspection, the bags contained around 52 kg of gold valued at approximately ₹40.47 crore (USD 4.76 million) along with ₹10 crore (USD 1.18 million) in cash. The Income Tax department is continuing its investigation.
