Continuous heavy rains flood railway underpass in southern India, biker risk life to cross

Due to incessant rainfall, a railway underpass has become severely waterlogged, turning into a flooded area in southern India’s Karnataka. Commuters passing through the underpass are forced to navigate dangerous conditions, risking their safety

The incident took place at Panathur railway underpass in Bengaluru on October 15.

Visuals showed a large amount of water had accumulated under an underpass, causing severe waterlogging. The flow of water was swift, and as a motorcyclist attempted to pass through, he lost balance. His bike began to drift with the strong current, and in the struggle, the rider was swept onto the bike, clinging on as the water surged around him. The scene captured the chaotic and dangerous impact of the flooding, with water rushing through the underpass, making it impossible to control the vehicle.

According to reports, in response to the downpour, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert, signaling the possibility of continued heavy rainfall. The Karnataka government has declared a holiday for schools on Wednesday, and tech companies across the city have encouraged employees to work from home.

The city has been grappling with unrelenting rain since early Tuesday, with major roads such as Airport Road and Bellary Road at Hunsamaranahalli suffering from significant flooding. Authorities are working to clear blocked routes and assist stranded motorists.
