Chimney collapse leaves workers trapped, rescue teams mobilized
At least 25 workers were trapped under the debris after a chimney collapsed at an under-construction plant in Mungeli prompting a large-scale rescue operation.
The incident took place in the Rambod area of Mungeli district, Chhattisgarh, central India on January 09.
Visuals show a collapsed chimney with debris scattered on the ground, as people gather at the site to rescue those trapped. A bulldozer and a crane are being used to remove the debris, with rescuers seen on-site.
According to reports, at least 25 workers were buried under the debris of a collapsed chimney at an under-construction iron pipe manufacturing plant in the Mungeli district. Rescue operations are underway, with police, fire brigade, and residents working together. Big cranes, JCB machines, and fire brigade vehicles have been deployed, but the rescue efforts are hindered by the extreme heat from iron dust.
Two others were seriously injured, with one of them also passing away. The deceased, Manoj Kumar Ghritalhare, has been confirmed dead after succumbing to injuries during treatment at a private hospital in Bilaspur. According to Bilaspur IG Dr Sanjeev Shukla, at least four workers are feared to be still trapped under the debris, and two employees remain missing.
The collapse occurred in the afternoon during the construction of a plant for Kusum Industries. A heavy iron mesh used for storage reportedly gave way, trapping workers who were at the site. Superintendent of Police Bhojram Patel confirmed that relief and rescue work is ongoing, with 400-tonne cranes sent from Bilaspur to expedite the operation. Authorities and medical teams are present at the site to aid in the rescue efforts.
