Chaotic scenes erupt in western India as police resort to baton charge during political party rally

In a chaotic incident in western India’s Maharashtra, police resorted to a lathi charge as a political party, namely AIMIM rally led by Syed Moin and Imtiaz Jaleel blocked the streets and created significant disruption.

The incident took place on the Kopri Highway of Mumbai city on September 23.

Visuals showed the chaotic scene, depicting protestors running in all directions as a massive traffic jam ensued. Police personnel were seen engaging with demonstrators, striving to restore order amid the turmoil on the bustling highway. Tensions escalated as both sides clashed in the attempt to manage the situation.

According to reports, on September 23, the Mumbai Police confirmed the lathi charge against AIMIM workers for conducting a ‘rasta roko’ protest on the highway. An FIR has been registered against them for obstructing traffic and causing public disorder.

The chaos reportedly began late on September 23, around 11:30 PM, when AIMIM workers expressed frustration over their leader Imtiaz Jaleel being unreachable. After waiting for hours, they escalated the situation, prompting a strong police response. The rally was initially halted at the Mulund check naka, where over 12,000 protestors were directed to return to their homes in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. A large police force, including the Additional Commissioner of Police and Senior Police Inspector, was deployed to maintain law and order.

The coordinated efforts of the Mumbai and Thane Police aimed to prevent any Muslim organization or AIMIM group from entering the city and disturbing public peace. However, the protestors managed to occupy the Kopri highway, provoking the police to take action.
