A wedding celebration turned chaotic in northern India’s Uttar Pradesh, when guests engaged in a heated brawl over date packets distributed at the event.
The incident took place at Saraitin, a town within the Hayatnagar police jurisdiction, located in Sambhal district and the video went viral on October 28.
Visuals showed in the middle of a wedding celebration, a sudden clash erupted among a group of people. The scene quickly turned chaotic, with individuals striking each other with sticks and fists, kicking and shoving in every direction. The atmosphere was tense, filled with loud shouts and the sound of scuffling. The crowd was in disarray, and panic spread as people scrambled to get out of the way.
According to reports, as part of the traditional wedding customs, packets of dates (chuhaare) were being distributed to the groom’s family. However, what was meant to be a customary exchange quickly spiraled out of control. Allegedly, a few guests attempted to snatch extra date packets, which sparked a dispute between the groom’s and bride’s families.
The situation rapidly escalated, with individuals hurling chairs, and using sticks, belts, and fists in a full-blown clash. The tension in the hall grew so intense that some guests panicked, leading to a brief stampede-like scenario. In the midst of the chaos, someone notified the police.
Police arrived promptly and faced resistance as the guests continued their quarrel. After substantial effort, the authorities managed to restore order. The viral video of the incident, recorded by onlookers, has since circulated widely on social media, drawing attention to the altercation. According to local police officer Chaman Singh, the disagreement arose from an attempt to grab extra date packets. No formal complaints have been filed, but authorities are conducting an investigation.
