Update: Century-old building crumbles in northern India, mother escapes with her child in arms
In a dramatic incident in northern India’s Punjab, a mother saved her child while escaping as a 100-year-old building collapsed.
The incident took place in Bandiya Mohalla of Ucchi Gali in Ludhiana district on October 1.
Visuals showed the debris of the old structure falling, with residents fleeing to safety. Among them, a woman holding a small girl in her arms was captured on video as she fell and almost got caught under the debris but narrowly escaped. After the building collapsed, the aftermath looked horrifying, with locals in the area standing by in distress as they surveyed the damage.
According to reports, the building was situated in a densely populated area, and two people, including the mother and her child, were injured and rushed to a private hospital.
Several families had been residing in the building, but they vacated it just a day before the collapse, preventing a major disaster. Neighbors, who had raised concerns about the deteriorating condition of the building, reported that their homes were also damaged due to the force of the collapse. Panic ensued among the residents as walls of nearby houses gave way under the impact.
