BMTC bus catches fire on busy road in southern India; passengers escape unharmed

Around 30 passengers narrowly escaped after a BMTC bus caught fire in southern India’s Karnataka. The incident occurred between 8:30 and 9:00 am, with the fire reportedly originating in the engine compartment of bus number KA 57 F 1232.

The incident took place at Anil Kumble Circle on MG Road in Bengaluru city on July 9.

Visuals showed on a busy road, a bus was halted, engulfed in fierce flames. The fire raged intensely, with thick smoke billowing and spreading rapidly. Nearby, people hurriedly crossed the road in a state of panic. Several auto-rickshaws were also present in the vicinity, adding to the chaotic scene.

The fire was first noticed by the bus driver and conductor, who quickly took action to evacuate the passengers. Using a fire extinguisher on board, they managed to control the flames until the arrival of fire services. The fire and emergency services control room received the complaint at 8:51 am and promptly dispatched a fire tender from the south station.

The fire services extinguished the blaze in the engine compartment within minutes, ensuring no casualties. Preliminary reports suggest engine overheating as a possible cause, although the exact reason is yet to be determined.
