Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina flees to India amid deadly anti-government protests

In the wake of escalating violence and unrest, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reportedly fled the country for India, as the death toll from recent anti-government protests surpasses 300.

The incident took place in Dhaka on August 5.

Visuals showed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was seen departing Dhaka under heightened security. In a video captured secretly by onlookers, Hasina was initially spotted traveling in a convoy of vehicles. She was accompanied by her personal belongings and a team of security guards, who ensured her protection during the journey.

The footage shows the convoy arriving at a secured location, where a private helicopter was waiting. Hasina, along with her luggage and security team, boarded the helicopter. The aircraft, clearly identified as a private charter, then took off, leaving Dhaka amidst a backdrop of mounting unrest and heavy police presence.

Amidst ongoing anti-government demonstrations, the overall death toll in Bangladesh has risen dramatically to at least 300, following a particularly deadly day of clashes on Sunday, which saw 94 people killed. The violence has led to significant unrest, prompting heightened security measures across the capital, Dhaka.

According to local media reports, Sheikh Hasina, who has been under intense pressure, has taken refuge in a military helicopter and flown to India, with reports indicating that she and her sister are now in a “safe shelter” away from their official residence. The move comes as protests are set to continue, with heavy deployments of soldiers and police patrolling key areas and barricading routes leading to the Prime Minister’s office.

A senior advisor to Hasina has suggested that her resignation could be a “possibility,” reflecting the severity of the current situation. Despite this, the exact circumstances of her departure and the potential for her resignation remain uncertain. The violence and instability have created a volatile atmosphere, with the government struggling to maintain control as demonstrations continue.
