Artisan revives tradition with silk shawl that fits in matchbox in southern India
Nalla Vijay Kumar, a master weaver from southern India’s Telangana, has dazzled the world with his latest creation: a silk shawl that fits into a matchbox. This extraordinary piece of craftsmanship, presented as a gift to Kondagattu Anjaneya Swamy Temple, highlights the rich heritage of Sirisilla weaving.

Visuals showed in a captivating ceremony at the Kondagattu Anjaneya Swamy Temple, the silk shawl was presented as a remarkable offering to the deity. The shawl, an intricate masterpiece of Sirisilla weaving, was displayed in its full glory, and then it was demonstrated how it could be folded to fit into a matchbox-sized box. This visual showcase highlighted the delicate craftsmanship and the exceptional skill required to create such a miniature yet elegant piece of art. The audience marveled at the contrast between the expansive beauty of the shawl when unfolded and its compact size when neatly packed away, emphasizing the extraordinary precision and tradition behind this handloom creation.
In a remarkable display of traditional artistry, Nalla Vijay Kumar has once again brought the ancient craft of Sirisilla weaving into the limelight. Known for his intricate work on matchbox silk sarees, Kumar has now crafted a stunning silk shawl so meticulously woven that it fits into a matchbox.
Kumar, who has been reviving his father Nalla Parandhamulu’s legacy, handed over the hand-woven shawl to Gundi Hariharanath, the overseer of the Kondagattu temple. In a special ceremony, the shawl was adorned and presented during a pooja, with temple priests offering blessings to Kumar and his family.
The tradition of weaving such tiny yet intricate pieces of art dates back to 1987 when Kumar’s father first garnered attention for his miniature silk saree. Continuing this legacy, Kumar has previously gifted similar creations to Tirumala Tirupati Venkateswara Swamy Temple and Vemulawada Rajarajeswara Swamy Temple. His latest work not only honors his father’s memory but also contributes to the preservation and celebration of Sirisilla’s esteemed weaving tradition.
