Ladakh shaken as 5.7 magnitude earthquake jolts Leh, authorities issue safety advisory

A moderate earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck the Ladakh region of northwestern Kashmir on Monday, according to the National Center for Seismology. The tremor occurred at 11:51 am and originated deep beneath the surface at a depth of 171 kilometres. Seismological data identified the epicentre in the Leh–Ladakh region, which lies within the highly active Himalayan seismic zone.

The National Center for Seismology confirmed the coordinates of the quake as latitude 36.71 north and longitude 74.32 east. Residents in and around Leh reported feeling the tremors, though there were no immediate reports of injuries, loss of life, or damage to property. Authorities stated that the situation is being closely monitored and advised residents to remain alert due to the possibility of aftershocks.

Ladakh and adjoining Himalayan regions are known for frequent seismic activity due to the ongoing collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. While this earthquake originated at a considerable depth, experts note that shallow earthquakes tend to pose greater risks as seismic waves reach the surface with stronger intensity. Deeper earthquakes generally cause less surface damage, although they can still be felt across wide areas.

The latest tremor comes amid increased seismic activity in neighbouring regions. A day earlier, an earthquake of magnitude 4.1 was recorded in Afghanistan. In recent days, Afghanistan has experienced multiple tremors, including a magnitude 4.2 earthquake on January 15 at a depth of 96 kilometres and another measuring 3.8 on January 14 at a depth of 90 kilometres, as per data released by the National Center for Seismology.

Seismologists continue to monitor the broader region for further developments. Disaster management authorities have reiterated the importance of preparedness and urged residents to follow safety advisories issued by local administrations.
