Pongal emerges as radiant symbol, celebrating rich legacy of Tamil traditions, says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday extended warm Pongal greetings to the people of Tamil Nadu and Tamils living across the world. He described the harvest festival as a shining reflection of the depth and richness of Tamil traditions. In his message, the Prime Minister highlighted Pongal as a celebration rooted in gratitude, hard work and harmony with nature.

In a letter written in both Tamil and English, PM Modi said Pongal is not only a festival of harvest but also an occasion to acknowledge the efforts of those whose labour enriches society. He noted that the festival reminds people of the deep connection between human effort and natural cycles. Addressing citizens, he conveyed heartfelt wishes to families and emphasised the cultural significance of the occasion.

The Prime Minister underlined that Pongal is closely linked with agriculture, rural life and the dignity of labour. He praised the contribution of farmers and agricultural workers, stating that the festival honours their perseverance and dedication. According to him, Pongal reflects India’s long-standing respect for those who work closely with the land and sustain the nation.

PM Modi also spoke about the social aspect of the festival. He said families gather to prepare traditional dishes, exchange greetings and celebrate together, which strengthens bonds across generations. Such shared moments, he noted, help reinforce unity, goodwill and the spirit of togetherness within communities.

Highlighting the cultural legacy of Tamil Nadu, the Prime Minister said India takes pride in being home to Tamil, one of the world’s oldest living languages. He expressed happiness over Pongal’s growing global presence and said the festival is now celebrated with enthusiasm not only in Tamil Nadu but also in different parts of India and among Tamil communities abroad. This global observance, he added, reflects the widespread admiration for Tamil culture and traditions.

Concluding his message, PM Modi once again extended his Pongal wishes and expressed hope that the festival would bring prosperity, success and good health to all. He said Pongal serves as a reminder of shared values, cultural continuity and respect for labour and nature.

The Prime Minister’s outreach to the Tamil community is being viewed as significant, particularly in the context of the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections later this year. His message underscores cultural appreciation while reinforcing the importance of unity, tradition and collective well-being.
