US Ambassador Sergio Gor returned to India on Friday, highlighting the “incredible opportunities” that lie ahead for the two countries. In a post on X, Gor expressed his excitement, writing, “Great to be back in India! Incredible opportunities ahead for our two nations!”
Gor was officially sworn in as the US Ambassador to India in November at the White House. Before assuming his current role, he had visited India in October, during which he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
Following his swearing-in, US President Donald Trump praised Gor’s appointment, stating that he would strengthen strategic, economic, and security ties with New Delhi. Trump emphasized the importance of the US-India relationship, describing it as “fantastic” and expressing confidence that Gor’s leadership would deepen bilateral cooperation.

Trump highlighted India’s significance, noting its status as home to one of the world’s oldest civilizations and its population of over 1.5 billion people. He also mentioned Gor’s growing rapport with Prime Minister Modi, stressing that both leaders had developed a personal connection and that this would enhance diplomatic engagement. “Sergio’s presence as Ambassador will ensure continuous communication and strengthen our country’s most important international relationships,” Trump said.
Upon taking the oath, Gor thanked the President for entrusting him with this crucial responsibility. He reaffirmed his commitment to fostering closer ties between the US and India, stating, “I look forward to enhancing the relationship between our two nations. I look forward to doing a great job for you.”
Earlier in August, Trump had formally nominated Gor as the next US Ambassador to India and as Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs. During his testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in September, Gor underscored the strategic importance of India, calling it “one of the most important relationships our nation has in the world.”
Gor’s return signals continuity in US diplomatic engagement with India, reflecting ongoing efforts to strengthen cooperation in areas including trade, security, and regional stability. His experience and prior interactions with Indian leadership are expected to facilitate further collaboration on shared priorities between the two countries.
