India has voiced concern over recent developments in Venezuela, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said, highlighting New Delhi’s focus on ensuring safety and well‑being for the Venezuelan people amid escalating crisis triggered by the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. Jaishankar made the remarks at an event in Luxembourg, urging all parties involved in the situation to prioritise dialogue and peaceful resolution rather than confrontation.
Addressing reporters, Jaishankar said India was closely watching events unfold and stressed that its primary concern was the welfare of the Venezuelan population. He called on all sides to sit down and work towards a position that ensures stability and protects civilians in the crisis‑ridden nation. Jaishankar emphasised that India’s concern stemmed from longstanding friendly relations with Venezuela and a desire for its people to come out well from current challenges.
The ongoing crisis began after a sudden military operation carried out by US forces in Caracas on January 3, during which Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were taken into custody and transported to the United States. This action followed months of pressure from Washington on Maduro, including allegations of drug trafficking and threats of ground strikes.
In response to recent developments, India has also urged its nationals to exercise caution and avoid non‑essential travel to Venezuela, given the uncertain political and security environment. The Ministry of External Affairs has been in touch with Indian community members in the Venezuelan capital to ensure their safety.
Maduro and his wife appeared in a Manhattan court where he pleaded not guilty to federal drug trafficking charges while declaring himself the rightful leader of his country. The next hearing in their case is scheduled for March 17, as legal proceedings continue.
Meanwhile, Venezuela’s Supreme Court has named Vice‑President Delcy Rodríguez as acting president to fill the leadership vacuum. Her assumption of charge aims to preserve continuity of governance amid mounting uncertainty and domestic political upheaval.
India’s stance on the Venezuela crisis reflects its diplomatic approach emphasising peace, restraint, and respect for human rights. By urging dialogue and prioritising civilian safety, New Delhi seeks to promote constructive engagement and support stability in the region even as global powers debate the implications of the unfolding situation.
