German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is scheduled to visit India for a two-day official trip next week to strengthen bilateral ties across multiple sectors, including trade, investment, defence, and security. This marks Chancellor Merz’s first visit to India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will host the German leader in Ahmedabad on January 12, according to a statement released on Monday by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Following his visit to Ahmedabad, the chancellor will also travel to Bengaluru to engage with Indian officials and explore avenues for enhanced cooperation.

The MEA noted that this visit will build on the momentum created through regular high-level political exchanges between India and Germany. Officials emphasized that meetings during the trip will provide an important platform to reaffirm both countries’ commitment to strengthening a forward-looking partnership. The engagement aims to benefit citizens of India and Germany while contributing to broader global development and cooperation.

Chancellor Merz’s agenda is expected to cover strategic areas of mutual interest, including economic collaboration, technology exchange, and security partnerships. The visit underscores both nations’ intent to work together in addressing regional and global challenges, reinforcing shared values and long-term strategic goals.

The MEA highlighted that the visit presents an opportunity to consolidate ongoing initiatives and chart a roadmap for future collaboration, building on the strong foundation of diplomatic and economic relations. Both leaders are expected to hold discussions that will enhance trade relations, promote investment, and deepen defence and security cooperation.

This high-profile visit is seen as a step toward reinforcing bilateral relations, advancing economic growth, and strengthening political dialogue between India and Germany.
