A strong earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale shook Assam and other parts of Northeast India early this morning. Residents reported feeling the tremors across several districts, prompting panic as many rushed outside despite cold and dense fog.
The National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 4:17 am, with its epicentre located near Morigaon district in Assam. The NCS, which is the nodal agency of the Government of India responsible for monitoring seismic activity, reported that the quake originated at a depth of 50 kilometres. The epicentre lies along the Kopili fault line, an area known for producing earthquakes in the past.

Tremors were widely felt across central Assam, including Morigaon and surrounding districts, causing temporary fear among residents. Despite the intensity of the quake, officials confirmed that no casualties or damage to property had been reported. Authorities urged the public to remain calm and stay alert for any aftershocks.
Northeast India, including Assam, is classified as one of the most sensitive seismic zones in the country. Experts frequently advise residents to follow safety protocols and be prepared for such natural events due to the region’s high vulnerability to earthquakes. The recent quake serves as a reminder of the region’s seismic activity and the importance of timely monitoring by scientific agencies like the NCS.
Officials continue to assess the situation, and local authorities remain on standby to respond to any emergencies. Residents were advised to avoid unnecessary travel and report any unusual seismic activity to authorities promptly.
