Five-year-old child clings to hope, trapped in borewell as frantic rescue efforts unfold

Five-year-old Aryan remains trapped in a borewell as frantic rescue operations continue, with officials racing against time to save the child.

The incident took place in Kaligarh village in Dausa district, Rajasthan, northern India, on December 9.

Visuals show a monitor screen displaying the movements of the child trapped in the borewell, with officials closely observing the situation. Other visuals capture excavators in action and locals gathered at the site. The tools and techniques employed in the excavation are also visible, with rescue teams working swiftly and efficiently.

Speaking to Newslions, Dausa Police official stated that the prolonged ordeal has deeply worried Aryan’s family and local authorities. The boy has been trapped in the 175-ft-deep open borewell without food or water since 3 pm on Monday. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local authorities are working tirelessly to rescue him, with officials hopeful that Aryan will be saved by evening.

Aryan’s mother, Guddi Devi, is in shock, and the family has refrained from eating since the incident. The child fell into the borewell near his home while playing with his mother. Rescue operations began immediately upon the arrival of officials, with District Collector Devendra Yadav personally overseeing efforts.

Initially, rescue teams attempted to retrieve Aryan by digging 20 feet from the borewell and using an L-shaped hook, but these attempts were unsuccessful. Makeshift “desi jugaad” methods also failed, but the team managed to prevent Aryan from falling further by deploying an umbrella beneath him.

After earlier efforts proved ineffective, authorities launched Plan B, deploying a piling machine from Sawai Madhopur to dig a 4-foot-wide pit just 4-5 feet from the borewell. Once the pit reaches 150 feet, NDRF personnel will create a horizontal tunnel to reach Aryan. The machine is progressing at a rate of 20 feet per hour, with the excavation expected to take 7-8 hours. Once complete, rescue teams will descend into the pit to finish the tunnel and bring Aryan to safety.
