Celebration turns chaotic: fire erupts during victory festivities
Tensions flared in western India’s Maharashtra, following a fire that broke out during the victory celebrations of newly elected Independent candidate Shivaji Patil.
The incident took place at Mahgaon in Chandgad Taluka of Kolhapur district on November 24.
Visuals showed a large crowd celebrating with color and the crane released an overwhelming amount of color into the crowd, which ignited the fire.
According to reports, the fire occurred when women performing an ‘aarti’ for Patil were caught in a blaze after a large amount of gulal fell from a crane onto their ‘aarti’ plates. The injured have been hospitalized for treatment.
Shivaji Patil, who won the Chandgad assembly seat with a margin of 24,134 votes, defeated NCP’s Nagesh Patil and NCP-SP’s Nandatai Babhulkar-Kupekar. Patil secured 84,254 votes, while his opponents garnered 60,120 and 47,259 votes, respectively. The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance, which includes Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar’s NCP, retained control of the Maharashtra assembly, winning 230 of the 288 seats.
