Police officer severely assaults youth with belt in northern India

In northern India’s Uttar Pradesh, a police officer has come under scrutiny after he hit a young man ten times with a belt in just ten seconds.

The incident took place at Mahwa outpost under the jurisdiction of Bakewar Police Station in Etawah district on September 9 and went viral on November 08.

Visuals showed a police officer repeatedly hitting a young man with a belt in a brutal manner. The video captures Sub-Inspector Jagdish Bhati hitting the youth, identified as Mayank, ten times in ten seconds. In the video, another constable can be seen passively witnessing the assault.

The footage, reportedly filmed by someone standing by the gate, quickly went viral on social media, raising questions about police conduct. Following public outrage, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) ordered the officer to be removed from his post, stating that the video dates back to September 9, 2024. According to police sources, Mayank allegedly abused and assaulted his mother and sister while intoxicated and had previously been jailed but was recently released.

While Inspector Rakesh Kumar Sharma of Bakewar police station has acknowledged the incident, he stated that an investigation is underway to verify the source of the video and how it was shared online. SSP Bhati, now on leave, is currently facing departmental action.

In a separate incident just days ago, a video surfaced from the Chakkanagar area showing a PRB 112 officer allegedly threatening a student by brandishing his pistol during a dispute. This video has also gone viral, prompting UP Police to launch an investigation into the matter.
