According to reports, tensions flared when Awami Ittehad Party MLA Khurshid Ahmad Sheikh, representing Langate, displayed a banner advocating for Article 370’s restoration. BJP Leader of the Opposition Sunil Sharma, outraged by the display, attempted to seize the banner, which escalated the situation. Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather briefly adjourned the session to restore order.
The scuffle follows a resolution passed by the Assembly urging the Centre to consider reinstating Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, fueling protests among opposition BJP members. Sheikh’s display prompted members to rush forward, tearing the banner and sparking the physical clash witnessed in the Assembly’s first session after a six-year hiatus.
