October 25, 2024
A New Zealand paraglider was successfully rescued by helicopter after becoming stranded on a mountain in northern India’s Himachal Pradesh. Rescue efforts continue for two other paragliders from the UK and Australia who remain trapped in the same area.
The incident took place at Fungni Dhaar, situated between Kullu and Manali in the Kangra district on October 25.
Visuals showed a helicopter hovered above a rugged mountain, its rotors spinning rapidly. Below, a paraglider hangs suspended in mid-air, secured by a harness as rescue personnel guide him safely into the aircraft. The landscape features steep cliffs and lush greenery, highlighting the dramatic rescue in a breathtaking natural setting.
According to reports, upon receiving the news of the stranded paragliders, a 10-member rescue team from the Mountaineering Institute in Manali was dispatched to the scene. However, due to the challenging terrain and the presence of large rocks, a private helicopter was called in to assist in the rescue operation.
Director of the Mountaineering Institute, Avinash Negi, reported that the helicopter successfully airlifted the New Zealand national and transported him to Bhuntar Airport, where he was later taken to Kullu Hospital for medical evaluation.
The Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Kullu, Vikas Shukla, confirmed that efforts are still underway to rescue the other two paragliders, emphasizing the urgency of the situation as they remain trapped in the rugged landscape.
Authorities are closely monitoring the rescue operations and coordinating with local rescue teams to ensure the safety of all involved.
